Open riser stairs, frequently referred to as contemporary or modern are simply stairs without risers. The treads and stringers of this type of stair are typically thicker or wider than other stairs. The treads can be “blind mortised” into the inside face of each stringer or “carriage cut” to sit on top of the stringer’s cut. This creates an open and light look, which affords a more simple geometric impression desired in many modern as well as rustic type homes.
